KDW 2015

INTRODUCTION

THIS IS THE FIRST DESIGN WEEK EVER DEVISED AROUND CHILDREN AND THEIR WORLD DURING MILAN SALONE DEL MOBILE.

FIRST EDITION

“Designing” for children means taking up a challenge, fighting standardisation, creating objects which encourage (rather than hinder) the spontaneous heterogeneity of approaches of the youngest.

Kids Design Week aims to celebrate those who have taken up this challenge, gathering together and promoting an exchange among many of those who, in different parts of the world and in different ways, think it is important to trace sensible lines around the first, uncertain but precious steps of the littlest ones.

KDW is also a way of searching for fruitful hybridisations between adults' and children's perspectives. It embraces and showcases projects which, amongst others, are capable to stimulate both in unexpected ways – ways which go beyond the original project’s intention.

KDW takes place in a venue that could not be more apt – among old sailing ships, historical steam engines and cruise ships, under aircraft wings and next to legendary boats of the likes of Luna Ross. Its first steps are about setting up a dialogue between firms and individual designers, self-funded projects and ad hoc installations. And also between a varied and interactive setting and the visitors (of all ages) which will bring it to life.

The Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia offers the perfect setting for a trade fair and a cultural festival focusing on design for children.

The museum spaces and the enormous objects that inhabit them are in themselves a fascinating setting for a child.

The set-up of KDW engages the visitors in a simple and interactive game, allowing them to contribute to the “design” of a unique backdrop for the exhibitions.

AERONAVAL PAVILION -1

Using experimental techniques conceived by the most fascinating contemporary graphic designers, the KDW team offers children the opportunity to take part in collective design processes. Graphic design can be a game to engage with together in an open space, following simple rules or having fun disregarding them. With THE NEVER ENDING SNAKE children only need two stickers and a set of easy steps to build a colourful net of waves which can flood a huge floor. This is a game which also questions the nature of rules - those rules that would normally forbid to draw on the floor of the museum, those rules that would normally be perceived as limiting whilst, on the contrary, they can reveal unexpected ways paths to creativity.

Albert is a prototype; it was created in France and was conceived for state schools. It is a digital watch which, instead of showing the time, displays mathematical problems. Even the laziest of pupils, who are constantly looking at the hands of their watch to see how much longer they have to sit through their lesson, will have to complete a series of more or less testing sums in order to know what time it is. Axel Schindlbeck, the inventor of the watch, will give a short and engaging lesson on time and will invite children to a fun competition trying to read Albert.

4PM
BUILD WITH STICKS AND YOUR IMAGINATION!
GROWING CHARMING "ARCHITECTURES", WITH SIMPLE GESTURES
STICK-LETS
FOR CHILDREN FROM 7 YEARS OLD
~ 40 MINUTES
LIMITED ACCESS, BOOKING REQUIRED / AVAILABLE ON THE SAME DAY AT THE INFO DESK
OUTDOOR

There are so many things around us which we consider of little interest and of virtually no use. Sticks and twigs, especially nowadays, may be seen to belong to that category. Stick-lets has invented a simple and economical way to build exactly from sticks and twigs. This young American label has researched what those creative and industrious children who want to build houses and huts in woods and fields may need and has come up with a “joint”: this is a vital part which is easy to use. During the KDW workshops, we will build together and learn tips about how to use Stick-lets.

4–9PM

ANIMATOYS. CAN YOU GIVE NEW LIFE TO A TOY?
PLAY WITH TECHNOLOGY
FOR DESIGNERS, CREATIVES AND MAKERS
BOOKING REQUIRED BEFORE 14 APRIL: TINKERINGZONE@MUSEOSCIENZA.IT
TINKERING ZONE

We all know what toys are; they rely on technology which is easy to use and reuse to create new and original ideas. Kids Design Week offers a free workshop for makers, designers, creatives, artists, students and professionals who want to experiment, devise and reinvent moving puppets. In the Tinkering Zone of the Museum, a special session will take place to research the mechanical aspects of toys, try to take them apart, explore their mechanisms, using Arduino and sensors to rebuild new ones.

5PM

ALEJANDRO CÉRON
INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP WITH UNKNOWN MATERIALS
FOR CHILDREN FROM 7 YEARS OLD AND ADULTS
~ 40 MINUTES
LIMITED ACCESS, BOOKING REQUIRED / AVAILABLE ON THE SAME DAY AT THE INFO DESK
AERONAVAL PAVILION -1

Alejandro Ceròn is an experimental designer. He creates fantastic worlds playing with bizarre alchemies. At KDW he presents an unusual family of headless animals, who travel to an unknown destination. Where will the Rare Company go? But, above all, where does it come from and how was it created? Ceròn is keen to tell us their story, but also to allow the children taking part in the workshop to experiment with the organic materials which create unusual shapes and textures, interesting to watch and touch.

SALA BIANCAMANO

A board game which takes the players into the world of fairytales, their characters, adventures and mystery. To be shared with friends.
The players will set off for a journey in the forest which will take them into a fairytale world, populated by witches, dwarfs, ogres, mirrors, traps... The players will have to build paths through the woods, assembling parts together and planning each time a new itinerary. With this game, Milimbo aims to break barriers between generations, creating an activity for all ages. Playing the game will be like telling a new story each time. At times, it will be the children who will teach the adults how to play, and other times it will be the turn of the adults to alert the children to a danger.

AERONAVAL PAVILION -1

Sanks is a new label created in a wonderful “factory”. Krux Amsterdam is like a small wooden town in a warehouse of the capital of the Netherlands, which young designers and skilled craftsmen have shared for a number of years now. This experience of living and working collectively has generated the desire to create a label which invites to joyful and unruly independent production. Sanks produces only small-size items, manufactured in a handful of minutes assembling unlikely materials and shapes. For the whole day on Sunday, the visitors of KDW will be able to work together with Sanks to create small and fabulous assemblages starting from implausible “ingredients“.

Our home is a shelter and we can’t do without it. It can be thought of as a very advanced item of clothing: it shields us from sun, rain, wind and snow. It’s like a second skin. On glaciers, at the equator, in the middle of the sea or on the top of a skyscraper where the wind blows, we can build the most appropriate shelter to live in. For every climate, for every environment, for every place, there’s the right shelter for everyone. This is a workshop which will help you create the best ‘outfit’ for your home, with fabrics and materials of infinite textures and colours.

KDW does not believe in keeping the adult and child perspectives separate; it strives to realise fruitful hybridisations between the two. For this reason, the displays also include items which were not specifically designed for children, even though they are particularly fascinating for them. It will be the children, through the guided activities of a workshop, who will turn into budding critics and will analyse, interpret and evaluate the design items on display. Their perspective may generate unexpected interpretations and conceive unusual functions for the objects, thus adding meaning and value to the role of “criticism”.

EXHIBITORS

Big firms and new enterprises who have recently and bravely joined this segment of the market, designers and projects devised ad hoc: they will all share this new way of conceiving the world’s most important design week, contributing to a rich network of exhibits. Their shared objective is to address directly a segment of the public which had never been involved in such a comprehensive and extensive way.

LAGO (IT)
COMPANY, FURNITURE

”No one was born knowing everything”. We learn through play, life experiences and mistakes. The Air Lago bed, an out-of-scale item, is a good mistake, a well-balanced design which generates an unexpected relationship between children and adults. Grown-ups think they know everything, which means that they can’t learn. Lying happily on a fairytale bed, so huge that it is disorienting, they can start again to unlearn.

TUKLUK (AT)
COMPANY, FURNITURE AND TOYS

Tukluk is a piece of furniture, a triangle, and a toy. Cylindrical magnets are attached to the edges of the coloured modules, which means that any conceivable shape can be built and taken apart. Tukluk will delight children, whether they're on their own or with friends – building huts, creating landscapes, hiding in them, embarking on new journeys every day, and that as often and varied as they want. Through Tukluk, children can discover dimensions and space, and comprehend and create their environments.

ONE SIZE FITS ALL
DESIGN EXHIBITION

ONE SIZE FITS ALL collects objects of uncertain identity; these are not necessarily designed for children but, thanks to their shapes and colours and their playful and unusual appearance, they are capable of attracting the attention and stimulate the desire of the youngest. Their presence at KIDS DESIGN WEEK is a prerequisite for a programme that does not believe in keeping the adult and child perspectives separate, striving instead to realise fruitful hybridisations between the two.
The exhibition will provide a setting of diffused and transversal appeal, beyond age distinctions; however, only the children amongst the visitors will be invited to a final phase of analysis and judgement, in the best sense of the word.During the final two days of KIDS DESIGN WEEK, very young design critics will gather together; in the context of a series of workshops they will compile identity descriptions and quality certifications of the items on display.
Featuring: Zanellato/Bortotto, Zaven, Adrien Rovero, Matteo Zorzenoni, Francesca Lanzavecchia, Alejandro Ceron.

ONLINE PLATFORM, PROTOTYPE

The first online platform that allows you to discover the world of prototypes.
For the project exhibited at KDW, 15 kids became inventors. 11 designers got inspired and created new objects. A team of master artisans turned them into prototypes. This small exhibition, in co-production with Eight Art Project, shows that creativity is maintained in the course of one’s life; something that stems from childhood: the ability to create and recreate the world!
Designers: Federico Angi, Moreno Dalca , Lorenzo Damiani, Francesco Faccin, Odardo Fioravanti, Giulio Iacchetti, Elia Mangia, Giacomo Moor, Lorenzo Palmeri, Matteo Ragni and Paolo Ulian.

The Rare company is an unusual and mysterious group. There is something hidden, underneath unusual skins, featuring curious textures and made of unidentified matter. The Rare Company has organic shapes and unusual textures. All the elements on display are ambiguous, although they are surrounded by a pseudo-didactic narrative which facilitates the understanding of the process of creation of these bizarre creatures.
